Flügger 100 years
1890 Flügger starts in Denmark.

November 1, 1890

J.D. Flügger opens a branch in Copenhagen. The original parent company in Hamburg - one of the oldest paint factories in Europe - was dissolved in 1973, 10 years before it could have celebrated its 200 years' anniversary.

 

1948 Flügger becomes Danish

After World War II the Danish State confiscated all German property in Denmark. This also applied to the J.D. Flügger branch that in 1948 was purchased by Michael Schnack, managing director of the company since 1941.

1948: Sales DKK 2,4 mill. - 20 employees.

 

1958 Flügger builds a factory in Rødovre

In 1958 the company moved from the centre of Copenhagen to a new factory and administration building in the suburb of Rødovre. This was the beginning of an increasing production of decorative paint of professional quality.

1958: Sales DKK 3,4 mill. - 31 employees.

 

1970 Flügger builds factory in Kolding

During the 60's the premises in Rødovre was fully built-up. In 1969/70 the company purchased a big site in Kolding, where a new factory was built for the production of water-based paint only. It was also in 1970 that the company was converted into a joint-stock company with the next generation, Ulf Schnack, the son, as a managing director. The share capital, equal to the equity capital, amounted to DKK 1 mill.

1970: Sales DKK 33 mill. - 175 employees.

 

1975 The Flügger chain of shops is founded

New building in Denmark saw a dramatic decrease after the first oil crisis in 1973/74. At the same time the paint trade lost its monopoly of redecorating vacant rented flats. Together with a number of professional painters, Flügger founded a chain of shops. Flügger Norway was founded the same year as well as Color, the sales company in Denmark.

1975/76: Sales DKK 97 mill.  - 206 employees.

 

1978 Flügger Kolding factory burns

In the summer of 1978 there was a fire in the Flügger factory in Kolding due to carelessness when roofing the factory. The production plant was rebuilt and is even today considered one of the most modern plants of the trade regarding manufacture of eco-friendly, water-based paint products.

1978/79: Sales DKK 142 mill. - 269 employees.

 

1983 Flügger goes public

In the autumn of 1983 the company decided to let itself be floated on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. The introduction rate was 875, which adjusted for bonus shares and changed size per share corresponds to rate 52 on the 20 DKK shares of the present time.

1983/84: Sales DKK 242 mill. - 291 employees

 

1984-85 Flügger buys up

With the proceeds from the public issue of approx. DKK 43 mill. the company bought Fiona, Denmark's largest wallpaper factory, and Dansk Smergelfabrik, Denmark's only manufacturer of abrasive materials. Both factories later merged with Flügger A/S. In Sweden the company bought Stiwex AB and Forsbergs Børstefabrik, paint brush and paint roller factories, which later merged under the name Stiwex AB.

1984/85: Sales DKK 289 mill. - 415 employees.

 

1993-95 Flügger buys factory in Sweden

At new year 1993/94 the company bought HP Färg & Kemi, Sweden's third-largest paint and varnish factory that later changed its name to Flügger AB. A subsidiary in Denmark, PP Mester Maling A/S, continued as part of the Flügger Group.

1994/95: Sales DKK 845 mill. - 900 employees.

 

1995-98 Scandinavian platform is enlarged

Flügger established a new central warehouse in Gothenburg with room for 11.500 pallets to service the Swedish and Norwegian markets. During these years, Flügger bought a minor number of paint shops in Norway. 1998 the company bought AdeKema situated in Borås, Sweden, with production of cleaning agents.

1997/98: Sales DKK 1.035 mill. - 1.056 employees.

 

1999-2003 Flügger consolidates

From 1999-2003 the company has primarily aimed at creating a structured Group with uniform concepts for production, distribution, marketing, and administration. Priority given to make the Group more profitable and well consolidated, and in this connection smaller but result oriented growth of sales.

2002/03: Sales DKK 1.092 mill. - 1.007 employees.

 

2004 Flügger buys HarpaSjöfn in Iceland

In 2004 Flügger bought HarpaSjöfn in Iceland making Flügger the market leader in the North Atlantic region. The acquisition was made to follow the strategy of developing in the Nordic Countries.  

 

2004- Organic growth

Lately the Group has chosen to aim at organic, profitable growth. We shall continue to consolidate in Denmark, enlarge the distribution in Sweden, Norway and Poland and make the Group more internationally oriented.

2003/04: Sales DKK 1.111 mill. - 1.007 employees.
